“I’M SUCH A LOSER. NOBODY CARES ABOUT ME. I HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER. I CAN’T DO THIS. MY LIFE SUCKS. I’LL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH. MIGHT AS WELL QUIT NOW.”
If your inner voice sounds like that, you could benefit from some hardcore positive self-talk practice. But don’t get down on yourself for me saying that to you, because that would only add to the negative noise inside your mind.
In truth, you’re in good company.

WHAT YOU THINK, SO YOU BECOME.
Your mom says that color looks fabulous against your skin. Your friends gush over how nicely that dress goes with your figure. And your boyfriend calls you beautiful. But your inner voice says, “Fat. Much too fat.”
Your inner voice can either be your kindest friend or your most savage enemy.
Guess who you end up believing?
Positive self-talk—a type of internal dialogue that helps you feel good about yourself—is meant to turn that enemy into a friend. But it’s at this point many of us heave a disgusted groan and walk away.
Is it really helpful to tell myself I’m confident when I absolutely am not? What’s the point in trying to convince myself I can do this or conquer that when I know very well I can’t?
When the words begin to feel like lies, the outcome is worse.
ENTER THE POSITIVE JAR
Recently, one of my sons created a “Positive Jar” during a 4-H event. The jar holds fifteen or so positive statements he can tell himself whenever he’s feeling down or going through a tough time. Little things like I am beautiful or I am unique. While the concept is a great one, I felt the sayings held no weight.
What if you aren’t beautiful by the world’s standards?
What is it that makes you unique?
Positive statements alone are a like jousting with a toothpick. They only carry weight when backed by Biblical truth.
So I took each slip of paper and added a Bible verse. Now when he reaches in and pulls out a slip that says I am strong, he can look in his Bible for a verse that assures him it’s true.
POSITIVE SELF-TALK FOR CHRISTIAN TEENS: 14 STATEMENTS STRAIGHT FROM THE BIBLE
1) “I am confident.”
-For the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared. Proverbs 3:26
2) “I am a unique and special person.”
-I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
3) “I am powerful.”
-For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power,love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
4) “I am strong.”
-It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. Psalm 18:32
5) “This is just a bad day, not a bad life.”
-“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” -John 16:33
6) “I can hold my head up high.”
-The one who believes in him will never be put to shame. Romans 9:33
7) “I am relaxed.”
-He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4
8) “I have a lot to be proud of.”
-“But let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:24
9) “I am moving toward my goals.”
-And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1-2
10) “I am enough.”
-But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
11) “I have inner strength.”
-You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Romans 8:9
12) “I am beautiful.”
-For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
13) “I can do this!”
-For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13
14) “I am loved.”
-See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1
BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE IN JESUS
