Day 12 of 12 Reasons to Rejoice: Advent Devotions
One of the best movies I watched this past year was about a young man who was coerced into working as the getaway driver for a crime boss. As you can imagine, there were some pretty intense high-speed chase scenes. When I looked at behind-the-scenes making-of-the-movie footage, however, I was intrigued to learn that the chases were real, not computer generated, and the vehicle was actually controlled by a trained stunt driver strapped into an apparatus on top while the actors did their thing inside of it. At no point was the vehicle ever out of control.
But you never see the stunt driver in the movie.

Sometimes life feels like a high-speed chase.
What’s spiraling out of control for you right now? Perhaps you’re in a relationship that isn’t going the way you imagined. Maybe you’re having trouble keeping up at school or work, or your family is in the midst of a crisis. Maybe you’re suffering the effects of the continuous political tug-of-war, and you’re just waiting for the big crash.
If so, you should find great comfort in Jesus’ last words to his disciples:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18, 20
Jesus might have physically left the world at that point, but that doesn’t mean he is gone. He promised to be with them always, and that includes us, his modern-day disciples.
So where is he?
Jesus is in control. He dwells in us.
“I pray also for those who will believe in me…that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me…”

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
Paul in his letter to the Ephesians (3:16-17)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Jesus is still here, and he’s in control. Even when you mess up, or when someone else messes something up, he still has control over the situation, and at no point does he ever take his hands off the steering wheel.
Rejoice, for he is with us to the very end of time!
